Abstract. Native galactoglucomannans (GGMs), which were isolated from thermomechanical pulping waters of Norway spruce, were modified through cationization, carboxymethylation, and imination at the reducing end with a primary long-chain hydrocarbon amine. The derivatives were tested for their papermaking properties. Acetyl-galactoglucomannan has been reported to have an approximate DP between 100–150 (Timell, 1967), equivalent to a molecular weight (M w) around 16 000–24 000 Da. It has a backbone of β-(1→4)- d -Man p and β-(1→4)- d -Glc p residues with α-(1→6)- d -Gal p and acetyl side-groups. The galactoglucomannan (GGM) extraction was evaluated on the basis of weight-average molecular weight (M W), yield and carbohydrate composition of the GGM. The M W was determined by size-exclusion chromatography with column calibration using off-line MALDI-MS analysis, and determination of mannan content in the fractions collected. Water impregnated spruce chips were heat-fractionated at three different temperatures (180, 190, and 200 °C).
